چکیده

Overview This chapter discusses some of the central issues in the design and interpretation of ERP experiments. Many design and interpretation issues are unique to a given content area, but many principles apply to virtually all ERP studies and these common principles are the focus of this chapter. The chapter begins with a discussion of the nature of ERP components, an issue that lies at the heart of the design and interpretation of ERP experiments. It then discusses some general principles of design and interpretation. Finally, it discusses a simple and yet vexing issue that must be addressed by any experimental design, namely the number of trials per subject. Throughout the chapter, the most significant points are distilled into a set of ten simple rules for designing and interpreting ERP experiments.

Stochastic simulation and graphic visualization of mitotic processes.

Computational modeling can be extremely useful in interpreting experimental results. Here we describe how a relatively sophisticated stochastic model for microtubule dynamic instability in the mitotic spindle can be developed starting with straightforward rules and simple programming code. Once this model is developed, the method for comparing simulation results to experimental data must be car...

Ten Simple Rules for Finishing Your PhD

After years of research and with completion in sight, the final year of the PhD often represents the most challenging time of a student’s career, in which the ultimate reward is the PhD honor itself. A large investment in time, energy, and motivation is needed, with many tasks to be completed; concluding experiments must be carried out, results interpreted, and a research story mapped out in pr...

New Dialectical Rules ForAmbiguity

A set of ten rules is proposed for dealing with problems of ambiguity when interpreting a text of argumentative discourse. The rules are based on Grice's pragmatic rules for a collaborative conversation and on principles and maxims used to deal with ambiguity in interpreting legal and religious writings. The rules are meant to be applied to a given argument used in a given case, and to resolve ...

Recommended guideline for designing and interpreting of Ramadan fasting studies in medical research

Ramadan fasting is specific intermittent fasting comprising significant changes in routine lifestyle pattern and may affect body homeostasis and metabolism. In spite of several studies conducted on the effects of Ramadan fasting on various aspects of health and disease, because of heterogeneity in methodology and procedures (sometimes inevitable), a comprehensive concluding for reliable results...

New scheduling rules for a dynamic flexible flow line problem with sequence-dependent setup times

In the literature, the application of multi-objective dynamic scheduling problem and simple priority rules are widely studied. Although these rules are not efficient enough due to simplicity and lack of general insight, composite dispatching rules have a very suitable performance because they result from experiments. In this paper, a dynamic flexible flow line problem with sequence-dependent se...
